What Are The Differences In Paint Finishes?
Once you have selected your paint color, the next step will be to choose the sheen or paint finish. The finish is a measure of how much light reflects off a painted surface. Some of the most common sheens are flat, eggshell and semi-gloss, but there are actually several more.
Sheen & Gloss Paint Finishes
Sheens and glosses range from no shine to high shine. The paint finish selected can affect how colors appear on a wall. In addition, it can add dimension to a room. There are many different types of sheen; however, there are seven key interior Benjamin Moore finishes to explore for your finish.

Description of Finishes
Flat Paint
Flat paint is a term for a finish that does not reflect light, and thus has no sheen at all. Because there is little reflection, more paint pigment will come through hiding flaws in the wall and proving a uniform surface. Stains are harder to remove from low-sheen paint so consider using a different sheen in high-traffic areas.
Matte Paint
A matte finish is nearly as shine-free as flat paint. It is more durable and tends to add a more luxurious touch to many interior spaces.
Eggshell Paint
The Eggshell Finish is one of the most popular finishes with professional and DIY Painters. It has a low-sheen that is similar to flat or matte, but it is more durable. It reflects more light than flat or matte finishes, but not as much as Semi-Gloss.
Pearl Paint
The pearl finish is a medium gloss that has high durability. The pearl finish adds dimension to trim and is great for walls in high-traffic areas. This finish is more likely to show lap marks and other painting flaws, so paint carefully.
Satin Paint
The satin finish delivers a higher gloss than eggshell and satin paint, but better stain resistance and durability than the lower sheens. It is ideal for areas that need definition like windows, trim and interior doors.
Semi-Gloss Paint
The semi-gloss finish is an excellent highlight especially for trim and doors. It is also great for kitchen cabinets.
High Gloss Paint
The high gloss finish is similar to a mirror. It has a very high sheen and is easy to clean. It can look stunning on doors, trim and even on accent walls. Be very careful painting and prepping walls when using a high gloss finish because the finish will accentuate blemishes.
