Why is it important to purchase new brushes and rollers when you begin a new paint job?

It’s important to purchase new brushes and rollers when you begin a new paint job because there are different types of paint brushes for different tasks. Check out our Brushes and Rollers Tips below:

Paint brushes, as well as stain brushes, are available in natural and acrylic bristles. For example, it is best to use natural brushes for oil based products, whereas it’s best to use acrylic brushes for water-based latex. There are differentiators in size, width, straight bristle edges, and angled bristle edges to choose among, as well as the type of bristles needed, making it somewhat complicated to select the correct brushes for the job. As with any type of job you want to accomplish, it is imperative to have the proper tools. Prior to using a new paint brush for the first time, it’s best to brush the bristles against the palm of your handle to release loose bristles. This will avoid having loose bristles show up in your painted finish.

Also, when purchasing roller covers, they must match the width of the roller. The most common roller widths are 3”, 4”, 9”, or 18”. Of course, you will have to put a roller on your shopping list if you do not already own one, in which case the covers will be included. Some covers have a thicker nap than others. For smoother walls, a thinner nap of 3/16” or 1/4“ is required. Highly textured walls require a thicker nap of 3/4” because it holds more paint and gives better coverage on the textured surface. Rollers are best used to cover large surface areas. Prior to a roller cover’s first use, it is best to condition it by washing it in water or covering it with painter’s tape to remove loose fibers. The fibers will not appear hardened in the final coat and the finish will be pristine.

Which type of paint brush should I use? https://texaspaint.com/type-paint-brush-use/ Sat, 16 Oct 2021 15:40:52 +0000 https://helmpaint.com/?p=15503

With all of the different kinds of paint available, there are brushes that are more suitable for one type of paint over another.

paint brushOn the marketplace, there are a variety of paintbrushes in different sizes, shapes, prices, materials, lengths, and bristle types. One could say that choosing the appropriate paintbrush is often as difficult as selecting the most desirable paint type and color. The brush selection process is centered around the surface, room, or project you’re working on as well. Luckily, there are only a few brushes that you really need in your toolbox to handle most of the DIY chores you might have around your house. These are the four things you should take into consideration any time you’re looking for the apropos paintbrush for the job: Bristle Type; Brush Width; Bristle Shape; and Bristle Tips.

BRISTLE TYPE

There are two types of bristles, also known as filaments: natural and synthetic. Natural bristles are made from animal hair and are best suited for oil-based alkyd paints. On the other hand, synthetic bristles are fabricated from nylon, polyester, or a combination of both. Although some synthetic brushes can be used with alkyd paints, they are more notably suited for use with water-based laytex paints. It’s best to err on the side of caution and read the label on the brush to learn more about its best application.

BRUSH WIDTH

A good rule of thumb is to match the brush width to the surface to be painted. However, for best results, it’s wise to use a brush size just under the width of the surface.

BRISTLE SHAPE

The square-cut brush dominates the marketplace. There’s also the sash brush, which is cut on a small angle, that gets into tight places.

BRISTLE TIPS

You’ll find flagged, or split, ends on the superior quality of brushes. The flagged bristles hold more paint and readily spreads the coat of paint more smoothly, creating better coverage. Tipped bristles come to a point, as opposed to being cut flat and straight like a square-cut brush. Tipped brushes provide more precision and tighter control.

Starting A Painting project? Make sure you have the right interior painting supplies before you begin.

Using the right painting tools will ensure optimum results when it comes to painting any room in your home. After you have chosen the perfect Benjamin Moore paint color, it is important to get the right interior painting supplies to make sure that you can complete your project. Here you will find all of the information you need to make any painting project go more smoothly and get excellent results with the best Interior Painting Supplies.

Interior Painting SuppliesPaint Surface Preparation Tools

Surface preparation is crucial in painting interiors. It is essential to have a dry, clean, obstruction-free surface before you start to paint. Here are the tools you’ll need:

  • Screwdriver: to remove all outlet and switch covers
  • Painter’s tape: to place on trims, baseboards, uncovered outlets and switches, and any other surface that needs protection from paint stains
  • Paint scraper or flexible putty knife: to remove cracked or peeling paint and to apply caulking compound or putty to cracks, nail holes, and other surface depressions
  • Steel wool or a wire brush: to remove grime and old paints or stains from raw wood
  • Sandpaper: to smooth out imperfections, sags, drips, or runs on walls or other surfaces
  • Tack or damp cloth: to wipe clean surfaces to be painted after using steel wool or sandpaper

Painting Tools: Brush or Roller?

Once you’ve properly prepared the surface, you’re ready to paint. Whether to use a paintbrush or a paint roller depends on the type of paint you are using and the size of the surface to be painted.

Paintbrushes

Although using a paintbrush takes considerably longer than a roller, it is ideal for cutting in, windows, baseboards, and intricate trim work.

  • Nylon/polyester blended brushes: the best choice for all latex (water-based) paints and coatings
  • Natural China bristle brushes: the best choice for oil-based paints, stains, epoxies, and varnishes because natural bristles will soak up the water and go limp when used to apply water-based paints
  • Paintbrush sizes: A 1- to 2-inch brush is ideal for small spaces, tight trim areas, touchups, and detail work. A 2.5- to 3-inch brush is perfect for trim and corner work, and the larger 4- to 5-inch brush is recommended for larger areas like walls or side paneling.

Paint Rollers

Paint rollers make painting go more quickly, but should be used only for painting walls, ceilings, and other large, flat surfaces. They can be used to apply both latex and oil-based paints and stains and do a fine job with both gloss and semi-gloss coatings.

  • Paint roller sizes: The standard roller length is 9 inches. For smaller areas, a 4-inch or 7-inch roller cover may be used. For larger areas like walls, ceilings, and floors, 14-inch and 18-inch rollers will get the job done more quickly.

Here is a comprehensive list of painting tools and supplies you’ll need to give your interior a gorgeous and lasting paint makeover:

  • Primer and paint
  • Paint brushes and paint rollers
  • Paint paddles
  • Roller trays
  • Mineral spirits/solvents (to clean up oil-based paint)
  • Drop cloths or tarps and cleaning cloths
  • Caulking gun, putty knife, and caulk/joint compound
  • Steel wool, wire brush
  • Tack cloth
  • Painter’s tape
  • Screwdriver
  • Sandpaper
